For Axl Rose, a long-simmering yearning to get back to rock-and-roll performance eventually erupted into an ugly confrontation with the band’s tour manager, and he now recalls the impact it had on him.

“It affected me for a long time,” Rose says of the Aug. 5 incident, which occurred after a tiff between Rose and his bodyguard Richie Faulkner over Rose’s drinking and drug use. “I was going through therapy at the time, and I think that’s why I was able to make some good changes.”

The flip side of the confrontation was a deteriorating relationship between Rose and his bandmates, especially his longtime peer, the late Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses.

Four days later, on Aug. 9, Rose left the band (which had fallen into a temporary hiatus between GNR and a reconciliation tour), and he has not had the chance to file the missing link in his storied career with Guns N’ Roses.

“I’d like to try and not feel so alone,” Rose says, looking at the notebooks filled with musical scores in his office here at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. “I’ve got some of the best people in the world on my side, but I’d like to be in a band with the boys again.”

Rose — who has long struggled with a host of personal issues, including substance abuse — says he has been working hard to get back on the right track.

And his current record of sobriety is a major part of his bid for redemption.

“I’ve taken full ownership of my life,” Rose says. “It’s pretty awesome when you realize you’ve been through the bottom of the barrel and you find yourself at the top of the barrel. It’s just totally different. I feel like a born-again man.”

Late last year, Rose confronted a drug problem that had plagued him for decades, and he quit drinking and smoking pot, though he admits that he still craves alcohol.

“Right now, I’m clean,” he says. “I didn’t have a drinking problem, and I didn’t have a marijuana problem. But I did have a cocaine problem.”
